Parental Info
Dear Parents,

When Kaleo sign-up time rolls around each year, as the Chairman of the Board of Student Mobilization, I am encouraged by the growing response by the students from our nine Mid-South college campuses. Your son or daughter is currently in the application process for Kaleo. We are honored that your child may join us for a part of the summer. I know, as a parent of college children, I looked forward to having my children home for the summer. But I can guarantee that your child will be changed in a Godly way after a summer at Kaleo. Over the past 19 years, we have had many, many testimonies of these life changing weeks. So many look back at this time as a turning point in their lives.

This summer project provides a great opportunity for "our" students to grow in many ways. As they study the Bible, they will gain solid principles which are an ongoing influence in their lives. They will have opportunities to develop leadership skills and grow in interpersonal relationships. Working a full-time job and living with others will allow growth in character and responsibility.

You are welcome to call our office in Conway, AR (501 329-7676) if you have any questions at all.

In Christ,

Bob Edmondson
Student Mobilization Board Chairman

What is Kaleo?
Kaleo is a nine-week discipleship training project whose purpose is to deepen and strengthen one's relationship with Christ. It seeks to do this by establishing a student in his or her ability to study the word, in the need and necessity of prayer, in his or her ability to share the gospel, and in the importance of Godly fellowship. It allows a student to spend an entire summer where his or her focus is on growing closer to God. It provides and environment that is extremely conducive to growth and development.

Basic elements of the project are as follows:
  • Work a forty hour a week job at any one of a number of jobs in the area. We provide the contacts, but the students actually get their own jobs.
  • Live in a group with four other people called a Discipleship Group. A D'group consists of one leader and four participants. Its purpose is to allow for one-on-one attention, support and love. Also it helps students develop in living skills, relationship skills, and gives them a close-knit support group that often lasts well beyond Kaleo.
  • Attend large-group meetings two nights a week. At these meetings, on Tuesday and Thursday nights, we bring in speakers to speak on the core convictions that we hope each student takes away from the project, we have corporate worship time, skits, etc. all in an effort to see the core convictions of Kaleo be transferred into the lives of the students.
  • Study the Bible in small groups. Each Monday night, each D'Group meets to discuss a passage of a book of the bible that they each have inductively studied during the previous week. Every student learns to study the Bible using the inductive study method which allows them to "feed themselves" from the word for a lifetime.
  • Share the gospel in the community. Sunday afternoons the entire project assembles together to spend some time learning to share their faith. Then after the training time, each student is paired up with someone who has had experience in sharing, and then they go out into the community to share the love of Christ with the vacationers and locals who happen to be there. Over the years we have really seen God bless our evangelism and use it to bring many people to Himself as well as to develop in the lives of students a desire to actively share their faith for a lifetime.
  • Get plugged in to a local church. Each D'group attends a church in the area and seeks to serve the local body in any way that they can. In the past D'Group members have taught Sunday School, provided assistance in the nursery, helped lead worship, given testimonies, and done outreach projects with the local churches in the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach area. This provides valuable experience that we hope God uses to develop a conviction in the hearts of the students to plug in and serve their home churches when they get back.
  • Enjoy themselves and their relationship with Christ. Kaleo is a very fun and very powerful time. Kaleo provides a student with the opportunity to go deeper into the heart of God than they have ever gone before. They learn the importance of spending time alone with God, and they learn, practically, how to make God the preeminent thing in their lives. Over the past 23 years, over a thousand students have gone to Kaleo, and as a result there are over a thousand testimonies of how God has used it in their lives. He certainly used it mightily in my life. I am excited about the possibility that He will use it in your children's lives as well.
